Closing...

I am considering closing down this blog.  With Pinterest so popular and such a great place to get crafty ideas and there being not a lot of girls sending things into this blog I don't really see a need for it anymore.  It has been fun doing it though and I have thoroughly enjoyed the things you all have sent in!  Thank you to all of you who have taken a part in this blog in it's brief history.  :)  I'm going to start another blog that will be just random things going on, occasional craft ideas, articles, etc... that I will post when I have an address and I have a hair do blog that I am getting up and running http://simplycurlydos.blogspot.com/  So I hope you will all stop by and take a peek!  :)

Crafty Monday

Hi all!  I got a new camera for Christmas so hopefully all my camera problems are behind me!  So hopefully I can keep up with daily posts again!  Hope you will keep checking back!

This is a craft I made a lot over the Christmas holiday cause it made such a great, inexpensive, homemade, useful gift!  I have also made some for a couple of wedding shower gifts as well.  And they have been a big hit all the way around!

Dish Towel Apron

All you need is a dish towel, you can get these for a dollar at Dollar Tree, some cute ribbon, and a sewing machine!
Now I've made the waist apron as shown in the above pic. and also the up and down kind that goes around your neck too.  It depends on the design on your dish towel.
With the waist apron all you need to do is sew the ribbon on both sides and you are done!
On the up and down one (don't know what else to call them! ;)  Pull in the two corners at the top of the dish towel til they meet, and sew.

Then measure out some ribbon just long enough to fit over your head.  Sew onto the top.
Last sew ribbon on at the middle to tie around the waist and you're done! :)

Table Decoration

How about a nature table decoration?  I love taking nature and bringing it in the house!
This is a centerpiece we made while we where in NH.
We took ferns and laid them out for the base.  Then took some berry sprigs and fall leaves and layered them on top.  It still needed something so we took the bird salt and pepper shakers and stuck them in the middle.  I thought it turned out really cute!

Now go out and see what you can find! If you come up with something cute I'd LOVE it if you sent it in!  :)

Craft

Hello all!  I keep thinking that I am getting back on routine blogging but then all the sudden life gets busy again!  :P  But I will go ahead and warn you I am going to NH for 2 weeks so I won't be posting during that time but I hope to post some pics. from the trip when I get back!  I am VERY excited about going.  I have never been to NH before and while we are there the Fall leaves will be at there peak!  :)  So here is an adorable craft to keep you all while I'm gone...
I am so excited about this one because it is the first idea sent in by a girl that does not live in my country!  Thank you so much Hannah!  I love it!

Rosettes

These can be used in so many ways:
-on a hair elastic
-on a bobby pin
(like that one up there)
-on a brooch pin
-on cards and for scrapbooking
-decorate the corners of your
tv or computer (if you have a fat
desktop one like me)
-sew them onto your clothes/hats
-make tiny ones for earrings
-on a dog's collar (so cute!)

and the list goes on and on.

They are so quick and easy to make, and you can use whatever fabric and buttons you want, to match any genre of dress. Every girl should like them.

For this size (ends up 4cm across), you need an 8cm in diameter
paper template, which you can use over and over again.

~1~
Pin the template to your desired fabric. I used an old top.

~2~
Cut out the circle. Sew a running stitch about 4 millimetres away from the edge. I started doing each stitch individually, but then my sister pointed out a quicker way to do it. You put lots of stitches onto the needle, and THEN pull the needle through. Like this:

Make sure it goes into a little bag shape; to help, you can stick your finger inside it.
Here's what it should look like once you've sewn all around.

~3~
Flatten out the 'bag', keeping the thread tight.
(The tan spots on my hand are the remains of a henna tattoo)

~4~
Next comes the tedious task of choosing a button. This part always takes me the longest, haha.

~5~
At the same time as sewing your button on, sew it onto your chosen item if possible.

~6~
Admire and wear.

Kids On Tuesday

Here is a fun craft to do with your siblings or to make for a class setting!  You can customize it for any occasion by designing the playing pieces!

Homemade Tic Tac Toe

You'll Need:
Foam Sheets of different colors
Scissors
Pen
Ruler
Glue Gun

Cut out a square and draw Tic Tac Toe lines on it.

Then draw an outline in another color.  It helped me to place the colored sheet over the playing board and drawing around the lines as shown below...

Cut out and glue.

Next create your playing pieces.  This is where you can make it into any occasion, like hearts for valentines day, crosses for Easter, presents for Christmas, etc...

And there you go!
Let the games begin!

Game Friday

Here is a REALLY good ice breaker game for a large group.  They played this at our Teen Night this Wed. night at church.  The teens seemed to really enjoy it!
Jordan

Find the Name Game

First, type and print out sheets of paper that have each letter of the alphabet listed with a line out from each letter.  Like this....

A.
B.
C.
D.
E.
etc...

Pass a sheet out to each player with a pen.
Now, when you say go everyone has 2 min. to try to fill up their sheet with names.
How they accomplish this is they have to go around and ask people what their name is and the person in return has to tell them their whole name, first, middle and last.
Each person writes down the names with the starting letter.

Example:
J.ordan
K.
L.
M.arie

Continuing to ask people till the 2 min. are up or their paper is full.
At the end of 2 min. whoever has the most names wins!

Hair Do Tip...

Hey girls!  I'm soooooooo sorry I didn't post all week!  :(
Just for an update... we had an ok opening weekend last week and it has been better this weekend!  Thanks for your prayers!

Here is a little add on to the hair tip from the other day.
I was telling someone about the baking soda/vinegar treatment last week.  And she told me she knew a missionary lady that that's all she uses for shampoo and her hair is in the best shape ever!  I've been doing it and my hair has felt a little greasy so I asked her about it.  She said that it will feel like that for a little while til your hair gets used to it and then it will go away and your hair will be the healthiest it has ever been!  So if you didn't get the recipe before it's 2 T. baking soda in a 24 ou. bottle of water.  Spray on thoroughly and scrub scalp.  Then rinse.
I also found out that apple cider vinegar is a natural conditioner!  I don't know if I'll stop using regular conditioner or not but it was very interesting.  :)
Just thought I'd pass it on!  Have any of you tried it yet?  And has it worked?  Have you gotten more curl?

Recipe Thursday

Hi ya'll!  This is an "eyeball" recipe.  Meaning, I don't really know the exact amounts I just kinda throw things in til it looks and tastes right!  ;)  (I do that a lot.)  So, hope this works for ya'll!

Dill Twist Pasta Salad

These are the ingredients I used:

1 box of your favorite pasta salad noodles
Mayo
Ranch Dressing
Frozen peas
1 Canned corn
Chopped onion
Shredded cheddar cheese
A little bit of chopped up dill pickle
Salt to taste

Ok, so first I cook the noodles, then drain and rinse them in cold water.
Then stir in the other ingredients in the amounts that you and your family would like.
*And I would make it a day ahead.  It tastes much better that way.
Well, let me know what you think!  :)

Curly Hair Tutorial...

Hi there!  I have a fun hair do Bethany B. sent in to post on Wed. but I came across this REALLY cool tutorial on how to get your hair super curly, naturally!  I did it and got WAY more curl than I usually do! I got so many questions on how I did it that I decided to post it here so all of you can try it!  (I hope with the same success! :)
So, here is the video, I would turn your volume off, there's like no talking just a song.
So, hope you enjoy!  Oh!  And tell me what you think and if you try it how it turns out!  :D

Oh!  Below her video on YouTube she says she does 2 T. of baking soda in a 24 oz. bottle of water and just sprays it on, scrubs, then uses apple cider vinegar, then conditioner.

Tips for Writing Letters

1 - Everyone likes to get personal notes and letters - Proverbs saysthat “Pleasant words are as an honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healthto the bone.” If you use pleasant words, you can be a blessing and anencouragement to your friends. That’s tip number one - Don’t complainabout everything when you write, but try to be cheerful!

2 - Don’t wait to think about your letter until you sit down to writeit. Be alert all the time for interesting or funny things that happenthat your friend would enjoy hearing about. If you think of somethingyou want to make sure you remember to tell them, you could jot it downon the back of the envelope or somewhere.

3 - Write like you talk - you should use good sentences and grammarmost of the time, but it’s not a school paper, so don’t be scared ofwriting! Just try to think of what you would say to that person ifthey stopped in for a visit.

4 - Ask questions! That is, if you want them to write back. It’simportant to not just talk about yourself, but to show that you’reinterested in their life as well. You could read the letter they wroteyou (if they did!) and ask questions about things they talked about. You could ask questions about what they like (What’s your favoritekind of ice cream?), what they’ve done (Have you ever been iceskating?), what they think about things, and anything else you canthink of!

5 - Make sure you answer the questions they asked you. It’s a goodidea to always reread the letter they sent you before you startwriting, and then again after you’re done to make sure you don’t missanything. Also, something they wrote may give you an idea of somethingto say to them.

6 - Be detailed! For example, don’t just say, “I went to a birthdayparty.” Tell when and where it was, who was there, what you wore, whatyou ate and did and talked about, and what gift you gave. Tell whatyou’re learning in school. Tell what your people in your family havebeen doing. If you read a good book, you could give them a mini-bookreport about it. You would be surprised at how much you could tellabout anything if you think about it - and those are the things thatmake letters interesting. Even if you think it’s boring, it’s a wayfor the other person to really feel like they’re there with you.

7 - Writing letters is fun, but it’s good to include somethingspiritual as well - Tell something that you’ve been learning in yourpersonal or family devotions, or at church, or ask them to pray forsomething, or include a verse or two.

8 - With some practice, you can make your letters look exciting, evenif they aren’t! Use exclamation points, underline important words orcapitalize whole words, use smiley faces, Xs and Os, or anything elseyou can think of. If you’re telling about what someone said, put it inquotation marks.

9 - If you want to, you could include something extra - like a poem, ajoke, a quote, a recipe, a picture, or a bookmark.

10 - Lastly, don’t forget to put the date on the letter, your name atthe end of the letter, and your address, as well as theirs, on the envelope.

Zucchini Chocolate Chip Bread Recipe

Ingredients:
3 cups all purpose flour
2 cups sugar
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon baking powder
3 eggs
1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce-(if you don't have applesauce, you can use 1/2 butter & 1/2 vegetable oil.)
1/2 cup canola oil-(you can use vegetable oil instead)
1 tablespoon grated orange peel-(you can use lemon extract, lemon peel, lemon juice, orange juice, or whatever citrus flavor you have available. If you don't have any, it's ok- it just adds to the overall flavor.)
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
2 cups shredded zucchini
1 cup chopped walnuts-(I used cahews instead of walnuts)
1 cup (6 ounces) semisweet chocolate chips

Directions:
In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, baking soda, salt, nutmeg, cinnamon and baking powder. In another bowl, whisk the eggs, applesauce, oil, orange peel and vanilla. Stir into the dry ingredients just until moistened. Fold in the zucchini, nuts and chocolate chips. Transfer to two greased 8-in. x 2-in. pans.
Bake at 350 degrees for 55-60 minutes or until a toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean. Cool for 10 minutes before removing from pans to wire racks to cool completely. Makes: 2 loaves (16 slices each)

*If you like, you can add about 1/4-1/2 cup cocoa powder to the recipe. If you do that, add a few tablespoons of milk to make sure that it's not too dry.

Veggie Stuffed Sandwiches

2 pieces of whole wheat bread, 1 pita pocket cut in half, or 1 flour tortilla
Assorted vegetables.
Your favorite sandwich spread.

Spread an even layer of sandwich spread on your preferred bread. You can use hummus, mayonnaise, spicy mustard, etc.
Now add an assortment of fresh vegetables. Ideas include cucumbers, tomatoes, sprouts, olives, peppers, lettuce, spinach, etc. and enjoy!

This is especially good when you have a bunch of fresh produce from your garden.
You could also serve these at a party or get-together. Just have the bread, veggies and spread available and let your guests make up their own veggie sandwich creations!

Hairdo Wednesday

Here is a twist. If you can do a french braid this should be easy.

Take the first little bit of hair from by your forehead and twist itto the right several times.

Now pick up a little bit from the leftside bring it over the first piece of hair and twist it in.

Next take some hair from the right side of your head, bring it under thelarge piece, and twist it in.

Continue alternating left and rightsides until all the hair but a little piece at the nape of your neckis twisted in and then ponytail it together to secure the twist.

Now if you are creative you can do something with the ponytail, but I usually leave it down.

(By the way if you want to see what is keeping me so busy here is our website www.lincolncornmaze.com . If you live in the area we'd love to have you stop by!)

Homemade Pita Chip

1 whole piece of pita bread ( I use whole wheat, but white would be okay, too)

olive oil

Italian seasoning to taste

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Slice the pita bread in the middle so you have 2 flat disks. Cut each disk into4 pieces. You will have 8 pieces total.Mix together the olive oil and seasoning. I never really measure it out, so just experiment and see what works best. You just want to have enough to evenly coat each piece of pita.Evenly spread each pita slice with the oil and seasoning mixture.Bake on a cookie sheet for about 5 minutes, or until the chips are just starting to brown. Turn the oven to "Broil", and keep the chips in the oven until the chips are getting brown and crispy. Watch them carefully, because they can burn really easily in the broiler.Take the chips out and let them sit for 1-2 minutes to cool. You can now enjoy your pita chips with hummus or refried beans for a complete protein, or have them with a big garden salad.

Kids On Tuesday

This is a really fun, outdoor game for a large group of kids!

Scavenger Race

The point of the game is the first (or the first three, depending on how many kids you have) child to bring you what you call out gets a piece of candy or wins that round.
So have the children stand in a line.
Then, call out something the children cam find in the area you're in.
Like....

A clover
A flower
A rock

Or make it harder like...

A piece of trash

After you call one item out say "Go!"
Then all the kids go and look and the first to bring it to you wins!
Do this several times!  It's a great time filler!
